Week 14

We are getting pretty anxious to start real work on the house.  We are meeting with the architect this Friday to go over the final drawings.  We met with a structural engineer, and then this week they came by the house and did some measuring and assessments. The architect got the report back this week and incorporating those findings into the final construction drawings.  A scrap metal collector also stopped by this week and asked if he could take anything off the site to sell as scrap. This was actually helpful, because we still have all of the really old appliances in the house and some old rusty bed frames.  The scrapper came in and took the old washer and drier as well as all of the kitchen appliances.  Since we are tearing out the old kitchen, this leaves only the old built in cabinets to remove.  I think I may have figures out a way to remove the built-in-place cabinets, so that I can use them in the barn as part of a workshop.  Not sure if they are going to come out in one piece or not, but since we are going to have to get rid of them eventually, not harm if it does not work.

I also finished up the big front barn doors. I searched and searched on line for some replacement parts for the sliders (i.e. guild wheels and door stops), but never found anything that looked rustic enough.  So, I ended up just cleaning up the old hardware and put it back in and it worked just fine.  I was also able to salvage some of the siding from the front of the barn that was on the smaller front doors.  I used some of the wood to finish the trim on the front door.  Here is a picture:
The barn is all cleaned up and while there is still a lot of work to be done on the barn, it sure would be nice to start up on the house.
