Week 19

We are slowly moving forward with the construction on the house.  I spoke with the plumber this week,  and he wants every pipe out of the house before he starts work on the new heating system.  The plumber has worked on the house in the past and was not impressed with the age of all of the plumbing.  I also spoke to the electrician. He loved the old house and barn, but was also not very impressed with the "not so grounded" electrical system.  The electrician should be ready to work next week.  He can work on the barn and the second floor of house, even if nothing else gets done, mostly because the barn is the barn and the second floor layout is not really changing.
I was also able to get our demolition permit this week. I should be able to pick it up tomorrow.  With the permit in hand, we can start taking down the back section of the house.  We are going to need some extra time, because we are going to try to salvage a lot of material from the back section of the house.  The floors are in good shape and are very old (14" floor boards) and the back section of the house is held together with an old post and beam frame.  We are going to try to preserve the post and beam frame so that when we build the new kitchen we can faux-frame the inside of the kitchen with the posts so that it looking like it was built 200 years ago.
I have also been working in the barn on my workshop.  I used the cabinet doors and drawers from the kitchen to build a new cabinet for my shop. Here is a picture of the cabinet (no countertop yet, I am still building it):
It looks like the cabinet is slanted, but the cabinet is level and floor is slanted.  Hopefully I will get the shop done this week so that I can move in all of my stuff.
The apple trees are blossoming and the yard is looking pretty good, all things considered.
The deer officially don't care whether I come or go anymore...

  1. yikes - "not so grounded" doesn't sound good! So glad you are able to get all the old stuff out and start over! You have SEEN the movie "money pit" haven't you? :) No crashing through the floor in a tub, now!

How fantastic that you will have a shop in a barn - it will be very "Yankee workship" (but we may have to kill you if you start wearing the hats.....)

I'm also very happy and impressed that you are going to save stuff off of the old house section - smart move. It will definitely make the new section 'fit' better, and hey, old stuff is cool.

Thanks for sharing, so I can build and garden vicariously through you! :) All I've managed so far is to plant lettuce this weekend......since you can still see your breath here in the morning. Sigh. I'll feel better when there are dungies at the dock again. :)
